Katie Holderness
Sleep Consultant

A child's sleeping patterns affect the whole family.  Parents become sleep-deprived themselves, irritable, less able to think, function, cope, and love.  Guilt and frustration set in.  Reprieve and solutions are closer than you think, but oftentimes that requires the help of a professional.

It is very common for children to have sleep issues. Unfortunately, many babies do not grow out of these sleep problems without guidance. When sleep problems become habits they can continue to get worse and become chronic.  That is where I come in.

I have been working with families in multiple capacities since 1997.  I have been a nanny, postpartum doula, and sleep consultant.  In addition to my experience supporting families, I have education in child development, sleep issues and psychology.  One of a child's most basic needs is sleep; yet, in our fast-paced society that can be hard to capture.  I work with families in the early stages to establish normal patterns.  I also assist families that have been struggling with sleep for while, having "tried everything".

Some families hesitate to reach out because they are overwhelmed.  My approach is non-judgmental and solution-oriented.  Just as each family is unique, so are the solutions that will achieve better sleep.  I utilize various techniques and philosophies; I do not promote any one particular style of coaching.

We assess what is going on with your child, and then work to find the strategies and approaches that are the right fit for your family.  Depending on the package that is best for your family, I will either leave you to implement the plan or I will support you through the process for the first three nights. With both of the options I am available by phone or email for questions as they arise.

Consistency is a key role in making the sleep plan successfully work for you family. With consistency you will typically start to see improvement within the first three to five days. If you are ready to stop those nighttime battles, awakenings, and nap-time struggles, contact me.

Sleep Solution Packages:

Your Personal Sleep Plan:  I will go through an intake process via phone and/or e-mail.  This will consist of your child's sleep history and other specifics about your situation.  While this is an emotionally-charged time, it is important that you are fully communicative to ensure the most success.  After I gather information from you I will start to put together a sleep plan.  Once the sleep plan is assembled, I will come to your home.  We will go over the plan, and I will help implement it that first night.  Though I will only be there in your home for a few hours, this package includes phone and e-mail support for any questions that may arise throughout the rest of the process.

Overnight Assistance:  This package encompasses everything in the Personal Sleep Plan and three overnights in your home to build extra skills and confidence as you set out on the road to better sleep.  After I have helped implement your sleep plan and your child is asleep, either I or one of my colleagues will stay overnight to help with any middle of the night waking.  You will get that same in-home support for the next two nights.  With this plan we will not do the sleep training for you overnight, but be there to support and guide you through this process.

Testimonials:

Katie was referred to me by a trusted friend who promised that working with her would be one of the best investments I could make. I initially hired her as a birthday gift for my husband who was really struggling with the interrupted sleep and inconsistent nap schedule we had been experiencing for nine months. Initially, I was skeptical that we would learn more than what we already had read in books and learned from friends. We received a manageable plan from Katie tailored to our needs and values regarding our care for our daughter. It was both structured and attainable, which was not only critical for me and my husband but also for my mother and our babysitter who watched our daughter during the week. In short, we all got on the same page and made our daughter's sleep a priority.

Katie would check in regularly and was available for questions, giving us a sense of accountability and a valuable resource who knew our daughter and who we could contact at anytime. Looking back, we wish we had done it sooner but are so thankful that we have given our daughter the gift of uninterrupted sleep and the ability to self soothe. It was indeed one of the best investments we made in the first year of our daughter's life.

Our daughter was 7 months old when we engaged Katie for sleep training and we couldn't be more pleased with the outcome - we only wish we had done it earlier as our quality of life - for all of us - is greatly improved!  Katie is a great listener and took the time to understand our family dynamics and the baby's needs.  She worked with me to craft a workable sleep plan and then stayed by my side while we implemented it.  Our little one had been waking up at least two, sometimes three times a night at that point and I was feeding and rocking her back to sleep.  She didn't have the self-soothing skills she needed to get her rest and I didn't realize that they wouldn't eventually come naturally.  Once we determined how much sleep she needed and the optimum schedule, having Katie's support made me able to implement it and stick with it.  She helped us establish our sleeping routine and then was with us for three nights to help assess how the baby was doing and give me the encouragement I needed to proceed.  It was much easier than any of us predicted - our baby was sleeping 10-11 hours a night by the third night and weaned herself from an evening feeding within five days.  Katie had predicted that daytime naps might be harder to conquer and they were on the first day but by the third day, we had a much happier baby going to sleep before she was overly exhausted and naps have now become regular and mostly pleasant.

Investing is our baby's sleep was one of the best investments we have made in our family.  The schedule works best for her and we now realize that will work best for all of us.  We consider Katie an excellent source of knowledge, support and encouragement in our story and will continue to look to her in the future as our needs change.  We recommend her highly.

Our newborn baby was not sleeping well and getting her down for naps was a challenge. Renaissance and Katie Holderness helped solve our newborn’s sleep problems. With her guidance our baby fell asleep more easily and stayed asleep longer. The quality of life of our whole family improved as a result.

Katie starting working for me when my daughter was only 12 weeks old. I was up to my ears trying to juggle a newborn along with a 2 1/2 year old sibling. Katie was a huge help in terms of getting my daughter on a sleep schedule. She understands the importance of routine and consistency with young children. She is able to combine structure with nurturing, and through that the baby benefits. My daughter became a longer, better sleeper under Katie's guidance.
